New roles at my company

I’ll try not to waffle but just want some advice please.

Ive been at my company just over 18 months in sales and when I started my managers were a nightmare and they all ended up getting sacked after my first 6 months. We got a new branch manager and I said I wanted to be sales manager but I was told I just need a little bit of training which I never got and lead the sales team for 5 months and got no feedback, I was then told I had to interview for the role which I was fine with but then after a couple weeks got told I’m not experienced enough in the industry and got denied the interview. I thought ok someone else in the company got it but it was a total outsider who was not from our industry got it and at the time I was livid because my background is plumbing and this person was from pet food and I thought my background is more to do with building materials than pet food. A couple months later one of the big bosses came down and then started asking for my input and unfortunately I lost my cool and more or less said don’t know why you’re asking me I was not good enough to be manager and now you want my advice? Jog on. And after that there was a record of discussion on my file lol.

Anyway my firm have this internal training program and I was put on it for team leader which I went on even though once it’s done there is no promotion opportunities and I should get the results the end of Jan. Now last few weeks we made a lot of redundancy and a few people left the sinking ship. But a sales manager position has opened up 60 miles away. I want to apply more to prove a point and see if they will at least interview me but I’m not going to travel that far if I got it.

My question is if they don’t offer me an interview can I say hold on why? You’ve trained me to be a future leader and I now feel I have the experience you wanted so what’s the deal? Then ok say I got the job and turned it down would it hurt me in the future?

Apparently depending on the climate there will be more jobs internally around May and they want to promote within plus in and in my last performance review I passed with flying colours and was asked what do I want to do in the future? Apparently the branch manager is leaving in a year so my manager may move up or I could do a field sales role. Also what I said to one of the big bosses 6 months ago have I stuffed myself?

I’ve had 4 jobs in 23 years so this is all new to me
your 'jog on' responses have definitely marked your card , so you need to be  thinking very hard aobut   how your managers and  their managers  percieve you
Luckily after we did the record discussion my branch manager called me into his office a few weeks later and said thanks for my change of attitude and getting on with stuff.

ive had a few good chats with the branch manager and line manager (who got the job over me) and it seems positive but I just wasn’t sure if I should stay and see what happens but I’m wondering are they wanting me to because I’m good at my particular or is there a real future if I continue to keep my head down. The manager I spoke to disrespectfully we have been fine since but like everyone says who knows maybe he has marked my card

Time does heal. Positive friendly attitude will go a long way to rebuilding bridges.

If anyone can offer their advice or opinion I’d appreciate it as this is all a bit new to me. I’ll start by saying that I’ve not had many jobs since leaving school and my first one I was there 20 years and my current role is job number is 4. The first job was just me and the owner and we were very blunt with each other and I’m discovering now most work places are not like this and I need to watch myself.

Anyway I applied for a sales manager position near home and passed the first 2 stages with the 3rd and final on Friday which is down to me and one other.

Its more what I know and a little more money but I am tired of the bathroom industry but they seemed positive about me and what I had offer and try to build a team over the next year.

Then today at my current job we had training and at the end I was kept behind and asked was I willing to be the branch expert in this certain area and accept training which I have agreed to.

If I get offered this new role would it be acceptable to go to my current employer and say look I’ve been made an offer but I want to see what your long term vision is for me as I’m more interested in this industry and want more responsibility but in turn I want to be compensated for it? I just get the feeling I’m being kept in this position because I’m good at it.

I admit I keep myself to myself and I’ve always just let my work do the talking but looking online apparently it’s all about networking and being one of the boys which is something I lack.

Not sure what to do? When I originally took the job I wasn’t interested in moving up but after discovering how rubbish a lot of the people I worked with who then got sacked I thought why can’t I move up the ladder and im producing great results for the firm.

General advice is not to accept a better offer from your current employer once you've been offered a job elsewhere. You were looking elsewhere for a reason. Does this training / branch expert role come with a payrise?

Well within reason you can say what you like - but that doesn't mean it is a good idea to do so!

The reverse of the line I have highlighted is your employer saying (or thinking) "We have invested a lot of time in training this employee and been able to assess him / her in detail over a long period and have decided they have come up short for a higher position!

It works both ways and there are two sides to every story.
  • This extra training and being the expert comes with no extra perks or money just a hint that maybe in the future I might get offered something else.

It's time to move, they're offering more responsibility but no actual pay rise to recognise that.

if you get the new job go there
