New roles at my company

I’ll try not to waffle but just want some advice please.

Ive been at my company just over 18 months in sales and when I started my managers were a nightmare and they all ended up getting sacked after my first 6 months. We got a new branch manager and I said I wanted to be sales manager but I was told I just need a little bit of training which I never got and lead the sales team for 5 months and got no feedback, I was then told I had to interview for the role which I was fine with but then after a couple weeks got told I’m not experienced enough in the industry and got denied the interview. I thought ok someone else in the company got it but it was a total outsider who was not from our industry got it and at the time I was livid because my background is plumbing and this person was from pet food and I thought my background is more to do with building materials than pet food. A couple months later one of the big bosses came down and then started asking for my input and unfortunately I lost my cool and more or less said don’t know why you’re asking me I was not good enough to be manager and now you want my advice? Jog on. And after that there was a record of discussion on my file lol.

Anyway my firm have this internal training program and I was put on it for team leader which I went on even though once it’s done there is no promotion opportunities and I should get the results the end of Jan. Now last few weeks we made a lot of redundancy and a few people left the sinking ship. But a sales manager position has opened up 60 miles away. I want to apply more to prove a point and see if they will at least interview me but I’m not going to travel that far if I got it.

My question is if they don’t offer me an interview can I say hold on why? You’ve trained me to be a future leader and I now feel I have the experience you wanted so what’s the deal? Then ok say I got the job and turned it down would it hurt me in the future?

Apparently depending on the climate there will be more jobs internally around May and they want to promote within plus in and in my last performance review I passed with flying colours and was asked what do I want to do in the future? Apparently the branch manager is leaving in a year so my manager may move up or I could do a field sales role. Also what I said to one of the big bosses 6 months ago have I stuffed myself?

I’ve had 4 jobs in 23 years so this is all new to me

Asking for your input could have been a subtle way of assessing your suitability for promotion.

I wouldn't say that is any king of laughing matter as your record has been annotated with your reaction.

You aren't doing yourself any favours with that kind of attitude.

    Yes, very possible you have.

Your "Jog on" comment is essentially insubordination, and I suspect will scupper/substantially affect your chances with this company.

(With less than 2 years employment with them, you're also at risk of being let go, for no reason if they decide to reduce the number of employees)

Also, let's say you got interviewed for the job 60miles away, were successful and then said you weren't willing to do the job due to the travel, what then? As well as rude, you'd be seen as a time waster - and you could almost guarantee that you wouldn't be offered other interviews for promotion.

Time to move onto pastures new.

Do not apply for a post that you have no intention of taking it is a waste of  time and resources. You have only been with the company 18 months and see how they are able to sack managers who had possibly been there years and then recruit from outside the industry. If you want to get on then lose the entitled attitude and work at gaining a promotion on your merits. Telling a senior to jog on is not  the most sensible thing to do which you should be aware of/
  • Yeah it wasn’t my greatest moment having a moan. I had a couple meetings being told the role was mine and then all of a sudden it wasn’t. When I got told it was my lack of experience I said you’ve not even heard my pitch yet and all I need is 6 months and if I fail I’ll go back to back too were I was.

have looked for jobs elsewhere but nothing about. I just don’t get why they keep saying to me I have a future and sending me on training but no real career path has been set out. I found it strange being asked where do I want to be in the future. About 4 months ago there was a field sales role I went for in another department which again no interview but this particular manager did give me feedback and to be honest yes I didn’t have enough experience for that one and it was more involved than I thought. They said what I should do in the future to maybe take this job on in the future.

when I came to the company I had no real ambition to move up but we have a lot of people getting stuff really wrong and I’ve demonstrated that doing my things my way are a lot more beneficial. After my original manager got sacked I managed to turn things around and wanted to take it to the next level but was just shocked with a no. It didn’t help someone was stealing and tried to say it was all me which after it all came out I wasn’t involved one bit but I think they didn’t handle it well.

So you think put it down to experience and move on?

How can I put this politely OP?  Your whole attitude stinks of entitlement.  You haven't been with the company that long, and when things don't go exactly as you want you go into a massive sulk and are rude to management.  That's absolutely the way to act if you wan't to progress isn't it?  In case you aren't sure - it isn't. To apply for a role you know you won't take is childish and will definitely ensure you won't make any progress with the company.
Best to do every a favour, yourself included, and find another company to work for, change your attitude and maybe see progress in the workplace.

So you admit you don’t have enough experience to take a field sales role, yet you expect to be the sales manager!
    Your entitled attitude is unbelievable.
If I was your manager, I’d be managing you out of the company quite soon.

I did it for a year looking after 120 customers and did it well.

This particular role I spoke to my 2 managers in my branch asking questions about it and my suitably for the role. They both said it would be a shame to lose you but yes go for it and try and get in contact with the person posting the role first to get more information. This person promised to call me back and never did so in the end I went for it.

When I didn’t get the interview and asked for feedback back I realised it wasn’t what I thought it was and even my managers said the same thing and thought I had the skills to be considered.

My firm are little unorganised hence why I lost my cool in the first place. No one is ever clear

your 'jog on' responses have definitely marked your card , so you need to be  thinking very hard aobut   how your managers and  their managers  percieve you
