Just checking when you say the smart meter display, do you mean the display on the meter itself, the thing physically plumbed to the gas, wired to the mains etc. or do you meant the IHD (In Home Display)?
i was told original it was down to both but now as you call it the IHD is what they saying i need to buy one myself which I'm not willing to do at all :( as it there equipment that failed again
Suppliers are not required to maintain a working IHD after the first year of installation of the smart meter, they are right that if you want one then you would need to pay for it. That does not mean you cannot monitor your energy usage easily though, you can see it in your supplier's website, or you can sign up for third-party apps such as Bright which allow you to review your usage in very granular detail.
The apps are fine if you just want bar charts or graphs showing usage. But they won't display instantaneous usage or provide meter readings (or at least the Bright app doesn't).
It sucks having to pay for a new IHD and have to jump through hoops to get one - There is little (zero) competition in the replacement IHD market. You are tied to purchasing one from either your supplier or one or two companies that are authorised to do the pairing. Picking a cheap replacement up from Argos or Ebay is not an option.
It would have been so much easier if smart meters in this country had a P1 port to plug a cable in like they do over on the continent. A missed opportunity there..

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

I certainly wouldn't rush to replace the IHD as it is far from clear, to me at least, that there is anything confirmed tobe wrong with the IHD itself.
