First of all,
Merry Christmas everyone.
Just Installed a seagate 250gb hard drive along side other hard drive that was already in PC.
Problem I am having is that when i put a cd in the cd drive and it then starts to boot up. computer turns off..
I have no idea what the problem can be. Cd drive was working ok before I installed other hard drive.
Reason for installing hard drive was because my son plays alot of games and other hard drive was running out of space.
Can anyone out there help?
Regards

You don't quite give enough info about the PC or what you did to be sure what's wrong.
If you got the hardware side right, it may just be that you need to go into the BIOS setup for it to correctly auto-detect the new hardware.
If you got the hardware side wrong, you might have two drives on one IDE cable set as Master, rather than one Master and one Slave.
Tell us a bit more about what you did, and what type of interface you are using (e.g. IDE=wide ribbon cable, SATA=thin ribbon cable).0 -
Hi Fwor,
Thank you for reply.
Old hard drive is on IDE cable and new drive is on SATA cable. New hard drive was found on PC ( Found new hard ware.) Problem was when you put cd in drive & it started to load pc switched off.
The problem is now fixed ( touch wood ) I was running both drives of one power cable from cd, so I think it was too much for it. Have now put another cable in from PSU to hard drives and it is working, ( fingers crossed )
Spoke too soon, loaded new game, son started playing then pc turned itself off. Tried it again and still turns off. (Randomly)
Really need help now.
Cheers

Hi Blacksheep,
PSU I have is a Corsair HX 620w Modular Power Supply. The game my son was playing (or trying to play) was Call of Duty 4. At present he is trying a different game and so far the pc hasn't switched off.
Boy I love technology when it works. Lol
Thanks for reply.

i'd guess at drivers for the sata controller, or/and bios for the mboard.
I'd look around the mbords and the drive manufacturer forumsGOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0 -
First thing I'd check (if you haven't already) is to open it up again and check all data and power connectors - both ends. I've found that SATA are much less "positive" than IDE connectors - and it is quite easy to dislodge other connectors as you work.
Then as Bookduck says - check for BIOS updates. You're in quite an unusual position having a SATA-capable mobo with the original HDD using IDE, so it may date from the early days of SATA and not have been fully debugged.0 -
Hi Bookduck & Fwor,
Messed about with Bios, took cpu out and put it back in, in case wasn't in properly. So far PC is working. Son quiet happy with call of duty 4.
Don't quiet know what happened but its working now.
Thank you for all your help.
