When to pay for new renewal car insurance? (Not when to get quote)

Car insurance due 4 weeks exactly. I've got quotes. Quotes are much batter than current provider.
Happy to go for the cheapest quote I got from a bunch of the search engines.
When should I sign up and pay?
Now, so I don't forget about!
Or nearer the time?
Or does it not really matter?
Thanks.

Speak to your own insurers first to see if they'll budge in light of lower prices (unless you don't care for your insurers).
If they won't/ you don't want to waste your time then I'd sign up sooner rather than later so that 1) you don't forget and 2) you don't come back in 3 weeks and find the quotes gone missing and the new quote is now much higher
The only risk of early purchase is if you were to have an incident between now and the renewal it would need to be declared and who was cheap with a clear history is not necessarily the same as who'll be cheapest now you have a claim to declare.1 -
And it depends on how you are paying for it. Presumably you will be using a credit card in which case I'd time it so it's on the next* statement if possible - taking into account what DullGreyGuy has said.
