Loud grinding noise when I brake.

Wow, that seems steep.
I will only fit quality pads, Textar or Ate, £80-100 for pads.
My mechanic is £60 and hour inc vat.
With a strip down and clean of everything including the hangers and fitting brakes £90.
So a rear exhaust part and fitting over £300 is steep.1 -
Goudy said:Most modern cars will have some sort of brake pad wear warnings on them.
Some have an electrical circuit that once the pads wears below a certain level, it makes contact and lights up a warning on the dash.
Or more commonly
An acoustic wear warning.
These are little metal tangs attached to the brake pads that touch the disc and make a scrapping or grinding sound once the pads wear down to a low enough level (2mm).

Brakes squeal is usually the brake pads vibrating in the brake caliper.
Brake dust and rust tend to cause the normal caliper movement to gum up and the pads start to shimmy with a high frequency and squeal.
A good clean up and a proper lube of the correct parts with brake grease (not normal grease, that burns) usually sorts it out.
You can sometimes hear brakes hum, particularly in reverse with rear discs.
Again it's rust and crud gumming them up but as the rear brakes only do 30% or so of the stopping, they don't get as hot as the fronts, so tend to show up these sorts of problems first.
My colleague has just walked in to the office as I'm writing this.
She's moaning her Yaris Hybrid had to have pads and disc all around yesterday.
The rears were original with 150k on them, but they hadn't worn away as much as rotted away!0 -

Who quoted you that?

Are you saying £200 for both pads, £90 for labour? What about the exhaust?0 -

Brembo, Ebc, Bosch, Lucas etc.
But from many years driving I’ve found that if you buy quality pads they last longer.
Textar are hard to find and quite expensive.
Between £40-£60 each set. Front & back, max around £120 plus fitting.
Toyota fit Textar as standard, Printed with Toyota in big letters and made by Textar in small print.

Also main dealers can give a good price at times.
For my Peugeot it’s the same price almost, Looking at the brake pad it says TRW.

Look at the air filter as an example of Peugeot and Citroen part.

In the old days people used to go to the main dealers for 'genuine' parts. It's now clear that you can get the same parts much cheaper, but not in 'genuine' boxes. I haven't bought any parts from main dealers for years. They are now irrelevant.0

When mine did similar it turned out the whole thing was toast. Warped discs and ruined pads as the callipers had seized on. Can’t remember the bill but it was eye watering!!!1
