I’m genuinely shocked they owned up to this and I think they deserve some credit for that. It would have been very easy for them to stick some random ashes in an urn and given that to you. In some respects I think that would have been a better solution. Ignorance is bliss as they say.The US case for lost human ashes is even more shocking, especially given the amounts involved but it will just insure no further funeral parlours will make the same mistake and will hand over any old ashes in the future.
Back on topic I’m not sure what you’re expecting as an outcome to this. In your shoes I’d expect a partial refund of the fee paid to account for the reduction in service and I expect if you took this to court that would be the outcome. Have you put such a request to them?0 -

My mother couldn't face the commitment ceremony for my father's ashes herself but was told where he was and went frequently to lay flowers etc. Then, 8 years later she received a phone call saying my father's ashes were still in the storage room and she had to arrange for something to be done with them.
No idea what went wrong, she was certainly angry about it... they probably equally could have kept quiet and just buried the ashes and would have been none the wiser. So this time she did go to the interment ceremony but didn't like the new place where he was put but they said the old spot she'd been told was fully occupied so not an option.
Clearly this type of thing does happen occasionally but thankfully courts aren't as generous in the UK as the US (at the same time they are more generous than in other European countries)0
