Is it worth repairing a 10 year old fridge?

  • in order to figure out if its worth it, you need to put some figures into it.
how much is a new, like for like replacement from a comparable brand?
how much is a call out fee to diagnose the fault?
    how much is a repair?

for example, if the fridge cost £300, and the diagnosis is £100 and the repair is £100 it's probably not worth repairing it as something else could easily break

As with all these situations, you can not tell in advance how much it is going to cost. You might well get someone around to look at it and do a minor repair for an all in price + parts. Such as replacing the thermostat.
In other words the call out fee could include up to up to a max say one hour including repairing it.

Thank you for all your replies. I have an update of sorts. I phoned two repair companies first thing this morning-one no longer has a refrigeration specialist and the other is closed until Monday. No leads on Facebook either. I decided to buy a new fridge. I even tried to place an order but delivery wouldn't be until after Christmas. I then searched for any just about affordable fridge that could be delivered before Christmas. Possibly by Thursday if I spend a lot more than I intended.
I'm now thinking I might as well wait for the sales on Boxing Day...and count my blessings for being fortunate enough to have this problem.

Could you have a look at F*cebook marketplace or Freecycle, if you have the ability or contacts to collect sooner?

Update on update. I ordered another AEG fridge today and delivery is on Thursday. The firm is part of the Euronics group so is fairly local. Thank you all again for your replies and input which helped my decision making process.
  • That's great news, you’ll have one delivered before Christmas. May it serve you well for many years. Enjoy your new fridge!

I agree that old fridges sometimes seem to last forever. But there is a hidden cost.

Even when new, their insulation was poor by modern standards and over the years that thin layer of foam will have largely broken down and become ineffective.
Your new fridge will reward you by reducing your electricity bill quite a bit. Also, they say we should expect planned power cuts in the future. Your new fridge or freezer will do a much better job of keeping the contents safe when that happens.

The new fridge is up and running. It's another iteration of the old one. I'm so glad I decided to buy a new one and even more so that it came in time for Christmas. It was worth every penny!

    Interesting.
So newer fridges may not be as reliable as older models but are more efficient.
I have an old Hotpoint larder fridge that's over thirty years old. Just keeps going and I don't think it's had any repairs.
Not sure what it's costing to run.
