BACS payments from NSI

NSI made a BACS payment to my bank which was inadvertently bounced back to them. NSI say the money must now be in its holding account and the bank say they don’t have it. The funds must be somewhere and despite jumping every hurdle it’s now over a month. I have raised complaints. NSI say they have sent a BACS trace form to me (2nd class!) and the bank continue to look into it. Anyone know how bounced BACS payments can be traced so I can get my hands on my own money?

How were the funds "inadvertently bounced back to them" ?
When did your bank return the funds. For NSI must be like looking for a needle in a haystack. The funds will turn up eventually.0
