Not true at all and I speak from experience of having driven in the region of 250,000 miles whilst living in the US.
It is very easy to get pulled over in the US by law enforcement as the most minor of motoring offences are taken very seriously, but the only piece of paper/ID any cop would want to see is that one with a picture on. There is no legal requirement to carry anything else.

I agree, i have been stopped twice in USA. Once for speeding (54 in a 30 - Beware, they hide behind trees with a lazer) and once for not moving over for a Police Car. Both times i was only asked for my licence (Picture Card) and can i say both time i was let off.

Which car hire agencies in Orlando tend to ask for the driving licence counterpart? My father in law says he has never been asked for his by Alamo.

This has come up before. I have used Alamo in San Francisco many times and they have never asked for the counterpart. My mate using Hertz at Sacramento was, though, and luckily he had it with him. In California some Highway Patrol officers know about the counterpart and some don't, according to my son who lives there. Always best to pack it just in case. Sorry I can't be specific on Florida.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
