Shell blocked switch to Octopus before generic email announcing takeover was sent. Can they do this?

Hi everyone, I'm with Shell and signed up to switch to Octopus before receiving the generic email notification from Shell that Shell was being taken over by Octopus. Octopus have told me Shell have since blocked my switch, but they will reapply to switch. Can Shell do this, since I made the switch request before receiving the generic email about the merger? Surely they should honour the request (and the switch incentive for referring my Mum, who is also with Shell!).

What are your thoughts, Forumites

I think you should have switched earlier and there was always going to be a cut off date and you found it.

Do you have any debt with Shell?
How long before the e-mail was sent out did you apply?

It depends on the reason given as to whether it's fair or not.

Thanks for your response. No debt with Shell, as the full amount is taken by DD monthly.

I applied just a few hours before the email was sent out. Shell did not give a reason for the cancellation, but I explained via their online form (speaking to customer services was not possible) and they have since approved the switch, after Octopus made a second application. Octopus are also happy with the arrangement, so let's hope all runs smoothly.

Thank you. They did not provide a reason to Octopus or me, but have since approved the switch, so hopefully the transition will happen without difficulty.

I think you should have switched earlier and there was always going to be a cut off date and you found it.

As the cut off date was not provided, Shell have now agreed to the switch, thankfully.

Well done, I think that is a mark of hopefully the sort of customer service you will get from Octopus going forward with them honouring their word so to speak.
