REKK and Fraud on Amazon

I've just been reading about this here
An group called REKK offered a paid service for getting Amazon refunds without returning high value items.  It apparently involved phishing and bribing Amazon employees to fraudulently log returns of items that the buyer still had which triggered a refund.
Is this purely in the US or has anyone heard about it here?

Smells fishy..  Cynical me thought it's would more likely be an Amazon insider that spotted a loophole and possibly recruited
other Amazon workers to contribute to the scam.

The way they word the scam you would need to give your Amazon details to a scammer and hope they don't use your account to
order thousands of £/$ or other leaving you with nothing.  Seems like an easier scam than trying to scam Amazon and less likely
to get found out.  What do you report to the Police/Amazon?  Whilst trying to Scam Amazon a Scammer stole my money instead?

I couldn't get past the paywall to read the article.
I don't know how it could work here, or how it could be a long term thing in the US.
There are so many Amazon warehouses and so many staff there'd need to be too many staff involved. As I understand UK Amazon employees are better paid than their American counterparts.

Knowing my way around Amazon there are possibly a few ways you could pull off a scam but you wouldn't get away with it for more than a couple of high value items and it's pretty easy to get caught.
