Hello Everyone,
Is the cost of repairs and decorating an inherited property, that is then subsequently rented out during the probate period, a deductible liability from the estate or is it a deductible expense from the estate income tax arising from the rental income ?
Thank you

are you saying the property was rented out by the estate in the period between the death and probate being obtained ?0

Those sort of expenses will be offset against the income on the tax return, so come out of the income not the estate assets.
Very ‘brave’ to risk the tenant from hell during probate 😈0 -
Yes km1500, that's correct.
Thank you Keep_Pedalling. I did think it was an expense against the income not the estate, but best to double check.
And not really brave as luckily the neighbours and I knew the couple before they became tenants.0 -
Not long ago there was a very long thread over on the property board where someone rented out their mother’s home after she moved into care and got the tenant from hell, who after a long legal process was evicted and great expense a large amount of unpaid rent and a lot of damage caused so unless you know the tenants as you did it is a risky venture.BlueJuly said:Yes km1500, that's correct.
