Student rental accommodation

  • Sue, I can’t advise on the contract and the link, hopefully someone more knowledgeable will comment, but just wanted to say I’m sure your daughter and housemates will find people to take on the spare rooms without too much difficulty, the demand in Leeds is huge.

@Silvercar, not sure if it’s just a Leeds thing, but students do start looking very early for next year’s accommodation, Nov/Dec is quite normal to start looking.

One of my daughter’s housemates was taken seriously ill just before they were due to move into their house in Leeds and had to withdraw from uni. The letting agent made it clear the rest of the housemates were responsible for the short fall in rent. They advertised the room and found a new housemate almost immediately.
I know, I lived through this with my kids. It’s annoying because they become desperate to sign up far too early and often end up living with people who wouldn’t be their first choice if they had more time for friendships to develop.

If they end up having to take the house, let the university know. Every year they take on more students then they have room in halls so they might be able to find someone in Sept.
  • Thanks Ksw3

I think they become desperate to sign up early to avoid the not so nice houses in the less attractive areas rather than their choice of housemates. Most students in halls have friends they know they want to share with.
  • Thanks for all your comments as they had no guarantor they have terminated the tenancy. Lesson learnt for these girls this time!

it is very difficult - I have seen students dashing to look at places Nov-Dec and ending up with people they may not get on so well with by next summer! if they do go hunting they really need to have everything in place eg guarantor / deposit etc if they want to be sure of getting a good place.
