My car was written off last year at a roundabout by an uninsured driver whom fled the scene whilst they were being chased by police. My insurance company were brilliant, they paid the value of my car as it was an untraceable driver.  It was a non-fault claim and my protected no claims bonus is not affected.

This is my first claim ever after driving for 15 years. 6 months on and my renewel is due and i was thinking of shopping around for new car insurance. When i have gone onto some comparasion sites, Ive noticed they ask if I have made any claims and obviously I would say yes. Then they ask who is at fault, some say if you you are hit by an uninsured driver you need to say that you are at fault as you had made the claim against your own insurance which I find strange, yet other comparasion sites just ask if you were involved in an accident and if you were responsible for it.
So can anyone works in insurance or has been in a similar situation calarify this please as I don't want to end up with my insurance cancelled for giving wrong information.

Fault, as far as insurance terms goes, ultimately means at the end of the claim is your insurance company out of pocket or have they gotten their money back. When your not to blame for an accident your insurer pays you then they recover it from the other drivers insurance hence net 0 position and non-fault claim.

As such there are various types of claims that are traditionally "fault" which your average person won't feel they were to blame for such as hit and runs, hit by uninsured driver, theft, fire, vandalism, deer jumps onto car etc. These days a small number of insurers have various "promises" that they will buck the standard rules and change how they deal with NCD, Excess and/or fault for certain types of no blame incidents.

Presumably, given the vehicle was being chased by police, the vehicle registration was obtained but then it was discovered the vehicle was stolen?

You need to look at your renewal notice and double check how your insurers have categorised the claim there... if it says none fault then you ok to declare it as such. If it's unclear then check with them first. The aggregator is just doing its job as many people mix up blame and insurer's fault so declare hit and runs etc as non-fault when they are a fault claim.

Somewhat of a pity that they did a fantastic job but you still aren't staying loyal to them
  • Hi again, I've actually done a comparasion with all four sites and actually my current insurer comes out on top £150 less than the others. I looked at the renewel document and it says i had 2 claims on the same day at the same time, obviously its duplicate, so I queried it and they apologised, sent me another renewel with a correction, and low and behold my insurance quote has gone up by £30. Its a crazy world looks like if i have more claims i'll get a cheaper quote.

No, it just means that time has moved on. The closer you get to the renewal date the price of a quotation often goes up.
