    I am sure that, if I had given an ex a sum significant enough to constitute half the value of a house, I would not only have remembered whether I had done it but also remembered how it was paid.  If your friend can recall the financial institution used and the dates they may be able to assist.

    Was a financial consent order drawn up at the time? If not, then yes she has a claim. And if you want to say an agreement was reached and she should stick to that you're going to need proof. Did either of you get legal advice at the time? Was the settlement sum fair i.e. enough to meet her capital and/or income needs at the time?

    Were all the other assets eg saving and pensions also considered?
