Fault Appeared During Car Warranty Not Rectified

Hi - I purchased a car which came with a 2 year warranty.

During the second year it had the windshield replaced during early 2022 which was handled by Autoglass. They fitted an OEM manufacturer and not BMW glass which I was fine with till it caused problems with the Heads Up Display - this was replaced the next month but again same issue - after the third time it was rectified but it produced a new error with the lane assist feature and blind spots.

Assuming this was still to do with the window and the camera feature it was booked in again but as the car was under warranty I asked the BMW garage to look into it since the car was in for a check up - they advised the glass was not BMW and therefore that was the culprit. I informed Autoglass of this too who replaced the glass with the company that produces BMW windshields but doesn't put the logo on.

The same error was still throwing and after losing some faith in the previous BMW garage I checked in with another as it had a safety recall in September - they also said the same thing - the issue is due to the glass.

Now Autglass have put in BMW glass the same error keeps coming up but as the car is out of warranty I am not sure where I stand?

Autoglass want me to take it to BMW to get it diagnosed by them as they feel they have done all they can, and if it is still their issue they will resolve it and pay for the diagnosis - if it's a BMW issue that I demonstrated to two different garages while under warranty should they be liable?

Any help massively appreciated as this is a headache that has been going on for over a year and I just want to be able to call it quits on it.

Thanks!

It sounds like Autoglass have handled the situation well. I can't see they can do anything more than they have done and have committed to.

As for BMW, it will depend on the terms of the warranty.  Why was the windscreen replaced?  If it was faulty, was the Autoglass replacement authorised by BMW as a warranty claim?  Or was it a case of a stone chip or crack that you had sorted through insurance?  If the latter, I suspect it will fall outside the warranty, because I doubt a warranty would cover accidental damage, and a third party's work on the car wouldn't be covered, I would think.

The window was replaced after a stone chipped it - Autoglass deemed it was best to replace the glass rather than the glue stuff.

What if the issue isn't with the glass but something unrelated and it has somehow caused it to be thrown in the mix?
  • If it's the same error then it's an ongoing problem. If the error first occurred during warranty then it should be fixed under warranty.

If it's entirely unrelated, and BMW accept it is, then it comes down to whether the problem is covered by the warranty.  However, the chances of it being unrelated seem slim.  It would be quite a coincidence that a part spontaneously failed at the same time the glass was replaced, and given there was a HUD fault when the screen was first replaced and now these two new faults when it's been changed again, I think it certain the problem relates to the work on the windscreen.

Why wasn't the windscreen replaced with a genuine BMW labelled one in the first place?  Was the OP given that option?

Lane assist usually runs off of the camera behind the windscreen up near the internal mirror. Often the sensors associated (e.g. rain sensor) require re-calibrating when the windscreen is changed, have they done this?

It could be the camera itself has not been refitted correctly or has now failed. What are the diagnostics from BMW showing as the error?

Hi sorry for the late reply:

I was never given the option of a genuine bmw windscreen - they always ordered and installed the one they chose.

They have recalibrated the car every time after installing the windscreen - the third time the car would not calibrate so they had to book it in to replace the window for a fourth time. Again they had issues with the fourth - they could not calibrate onsite but connected with an online tech team who did it over the net.

The car functioned as required but then within a day or so returned back to the original error.

This time with the BMW glass - again couldn't calibrate themselves so got the online tech team to - ran smoothly for the afternoon but then returned the same error about 3 hours later.

The one constant in the problems is the camera so it's possible/probable? that is the underlying problem.  The main caveat being that if a non BMW screen was fitted could damage have been done to the camera?  All questions rather than solutions I'm afraid.

Well sent an email to autoglass containing 2 different garage reports from a while back - they wanted to see them with regards to the garage saying it was due to the glass not being from bmw.

Will see what they come back with on Monday hopefully.

Hi just to follow up on this - Autoglass came back and said initially these faults were found on the car before they carried out any work

30C400 – bottom radiator blind flap – component blocked

021924 – flex ray data bus – controller fault – faulty

    804081 – READY CAN signal – faulty

    804415 – Wireless control – undervoltage

8044D7 – LIN-bus light sources for interior lighting – communication error

    800A01 – Front Camera – restricted vision

    800ABE – Front Camera – blindness

B7F805 – L band antenna – open circuit in wiring

B7F8CB – information display – no picture signal

They cleared the codes with the window and carried out the work. At no point has bmw told me about these even though the car was with them before it went to autoglass

It is booked in for a diagnostic with them so will see what they say. As the issues came up during the warranty period and now has the correct glass fitted - is there anything that covers me for any further financial costs apart from the diagnosis cost?
