Car Insurance Renewal

I was rear ended at the end of August and my car was towed to the garage designated by my insurance company. It is still there awaiting parts over 3.5 months later with no expected date of when they will have the parts. My renewal is due January 16th 2024 and I wanted to start looking at other insurance companies for a cheaper quote but can I do that while the car is off the road? It currently does not have an MOT as that expired in November so I could not renew the tax either at the end of November and therefore did a SORN. I am concerned that come January I will not be able to renew the insurance even with my current insurers.  Has anyone had this problem? Any advice would be most appreciated.

No need for a car to be on the road to buy insurance... whilst it has accident damage and no MOT its value will be reduced if its stolen or arson etc but likely the garage would be liable in that scenario anyway.

Have you told the garage the vehicle has been SORNed? Some garages don't have enough space to keep all the cars and so may resort to parking some on the road which obviously would be an issue for you.

Thank you for information. I never thought of that I will call them now.  I did call them prior to the MOT expiring to ask how much longer they thought it might be, that the MOT needed to be done so that I could tax the car at the end of the month but they were very off hand with me, gruffly told me they will call me when its ready.
