Cadent new meter error
I would appreciate advice on an error by Cadent. I called them out a 5 days ago via the emergency gas line after smelling gas at my property. They found a 'small' leak at the meter itself, and changed it; and said they would notify my supplier, Shell Energy. Both old and new meters are not smart meters and I submit meter readings each month.
The engineer came late on a very cold night, and I have just gone to read the meter to find it beginning with 2xxxx instead of 1xxxx - so 10000 more units than should be the case - presumably an error made in the conditions.
I have submitted a complaint to Cadent online, including photographs of the current meter, and the previous meter reading from just under a month ago; and asked that the matter be dealt with very urgently. I have only just noticed this and it is out of office hours for Cadent, and so I will also phone them first thing tomorrow.
Does anyone know what else to do in this situation? Do I contact Shell? I have very recently had notification from them of being moved to Octopus; which may not help matters.
Anything else people suggest I do in the situation?

Pipeline operators normally just put i8n standard G4 meters if there is a leak. They won't necessarily be new. The closing and opening readings will have been recorded and forwarded to the supplier and should also be written on the new meter.

Ah yes - you are right - it has those details recorded! I wish he had mentioned this is what happened - it just happened to look, to a complete non-expert like me, as if the reading on the new meter was almost exactly 10000 units more than it should have been, and hence a mistake with the first digit.
Thanks for responding so quickly - it has relieved a lot of stress :-) I will contact Shell tomorrow to ask about submitting the reading with the new meter, which they have asked for I assume on the basis of the move to Octopus.0 -
My pleasure. Make sure you note both readings, to give them, and also the serial number of the new meter, because it is likely it may not have got to them yet. The meter change has to go onto a national database before the supplier will be aware of it.1

Thanks again, Netexporter - your help is very much-appreciated :-)0

Belt and braces, send them a photo of the new meter, with the exchange info and meter number showing.0
