Nationwide payment reference news

When I logged on to the Natiowide App this morning a message was displayed to say that the reference on a payment to an existing payee could now be updated - something that has been a bugbear on here for many years. I tried it and it looks like it'll work (I didn't complete the transaction as I didn't need to pay anyone today).

Thanks. That’s useful to know. I have always found it a real pain if I had an existing payee who I wanted to send a payment to for a reason different to the original payment. I then had to set up a new payee, just because you couldn’t change the reference until now 😊

    would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

There's definitely no 'a' in 'definitely'.
  • I wish HSBC, First Direct and Barclays could also do this. I've got multiple duplicate payees as they get saved afresh each time you change the reference, and can only be deleted in Online Banking which I rarely use.
  • I've just logged on to my Nationwide Flex account- I didn't get a message and I couldn't see anywhere to edit existing payees (only delete them). Presumably this option is being rolled out in phases....
  • I find the ability to have multiple payees with the same Sort Code/Account No but differing references to be really useful - funding my three MonBS RS accounts at month start for example.

There was an update to the iOS app yesterday, which mentioned what’s new.
Currently the app is Version 42.2.0.
After updating the app, I received a full-screen message about the ability to change the reference field.

I'm assuming this is online banking, I've just looked and it doesn't appear to be available there (yet, and maybe never!). I did say in my OP that I'd logged on to the App, but perhaps I should have clarified by saying that it's the Android version, @GalacticaActual has confirmed that it's also on iOS.
  • They used to let you change the reference numbers simply by logging in then... said naïve members were getting scammed so made you use the card reader to update then... said naïve members were still getting scammed so they removed the functionality altogether.

You can now change the reference, but Nationwide still doesn't show the reference on the transaction history for payments sent or received.
  • I noticed the new message this morning.  Last weekend I sent a friend some money and would have liked to change that it wasn't for "M&S", as the last thing I sent to her was for, so it will be useful next time I need to send her money. I'm sure the recipient will like it as well, assume when the money arrives in their bank account it says whatever I put it down as payment for?

  • Rubbish. It's November 2024 and this is still not implemented. According to a Customer Services rep. Nationwide choose not to present payment references to customers. Only they can see them. Way to go Nationwide. Way to go!
