Smart TV - how do I get Freeview?

Options
We’ve just got a Philips 50PUS7906 smart TV in the kitchen, but have no cables running to it (no Ariel, satellite etc).
how do we get Freeview on it?  Bit of a technophobe and it’s asking for cable/antenna/satellite installation, but we none going to it

i guess I assumed as it was smart, we’d get everything via our home Wi-Fi

Smart TV's can be set up via your home Router in the set-up menu. No need for an aerial, dish or even something like NowTV or an Amazon Firestick. It's all done wirelessly as if by magic!

The Smarts in smart TVs tend not to be very smart at all and there are lots of issues with manufacturers not keeping apps up to date or changing OS' and then neglecting old versions. I'd say you are much better off with a Firestick or equivalent even in a smart TV. Our fairly pricy OLED screen even on day 1 would buffer when starting 4k footage and occasionally buffer mid film. Both our Firestick and AppleTV connected to the same router in the same position start instantly and never buffer mid programme.

Without an aerial or satellite lead you will be down to the smart apps so things like iPlayer, ITVX, Netflix, SkyGo etc once you've connected it to your wifi and installed your preferred apps.
  • Freeview is broadcast TV, which comes in through an aerial.  You can stream from some of the channels using their specific apps, but that isn't "freeview", and not all channels have apps.

Your smart TV is a computer, albeit one with an embedded system, so you might need to overcome your phobia of technology.

not freeview, but a £20 Roku from currys or similar will give you a much wider range of streaming that the smart tv itself..and usually a lot cheaper than firesticks and the like ;)

How To Watch Freeview Without an Aerial

The best way to watch Freeview without an aerial is by using the Freeview Play app, which can be downloaded on smartphones, tablets, laptops and android TV boxes. It’s also available on some smart TVs such as LG.

If you don’t have a smart TV or can’t cast from your phone, there is an easy solution. Buy yourself a cheap Android box that connects to any HDMI-ready television with the Freeview Play app, and get ready for bingeing! The app is available on the Google Store.

That is not Freeview, it is far from it.  All you get with the Freeview app is links to other apps such as UKTVPlay etc, some of which may provide live programming. It does not provide live Freeview TV, there are many channels not available.  The only way to get Freeview is with an aerial.
Browse great TV shows from BBC iPlayer, ITVX, All 4, My5 and UKTV Play, all in one place. Just make sure you have their apps on your device to enjoy the best Freeview experience.

It fooled me too, (I didn't read the second paragraph)

There is no "freeview app" in the ggogle play store.

However, it caused me to find a couple of free streaming services, Redbull TV- (less mainstream action sports) & Now TV.  Like UKTV Play there is some good content, and the adverts are 2 orders of magnitude less annoying than the virtually unwatchable ITVX (and 3 orders of magnitude less annoying than Youtube)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
