Proof of income-What do i send?

Hello, my daughter gets various grants due to her dads low paid self employed work. Today she received a letter from the student finance asking for a" full statement" of financial circumstances for the tax year ending april 2007.

I was wondering what exactly they need?

Her fathers accountant hasnt finalised that years tax and it will be going to the inland revenue at the latest date of 31st january 2008 but the student finance people are demanding details by the 10th january. I did ring them but the office is closed until thursday. Any knowledge/answers gratefully received. Thanks .

p.s.Also, will she get her payment ok which is due on the 7th of january.?

  • Can you phone the LEA, they should be back to work after New Year I think? I know this does not apply to you, but my mum got something from her work, I think it was a statement of earnings with net pay and pay with tax etc. Did the SLC state when they needed a reply by?

Thanks for answering. They are open thursday so i will try then. The problem is the student finance want the information within 3 weeks from date of letter (20th december) so by 10th january. I will have the information by 31st january. If she gets enough money to pay her months house rent and get some food then that will be ok but just a worry coz like many other people we dont have alot of money and it would be a strain to pay her rent.

  • Well they are so bloody inefficient they should be used to things being so late! Phone them up and tell them the situation, I'm sure they would be okay with it.

    Good luck.

I don't think it will be a problem if you ring and let them know.

My friend's husband is self employed and they are always behind with regard to student finance. The LEA have just accepted that his financial year is different.

Also, when I haven't had information they require and have rang to ask for extra time they have told me they tend to stagger the letters so they don't get loads returned at the same time. She said as long as everyone else doesn't do the same it would not be a problem!

  • it won't affect payment of jan instalment.

Call your LEA to double check what they want - it will either be the tax return they want to see or they may ask him to complete a GSA1 form (this asks him to declare what income he has declared to the inland revenue). You can download a GSA1 form from the student finance direct website or you can ask your LEA to post one to you.

As long as you let your LEA know when you are able to get the information to them I wouldn't worry at this stage.
