No one has mentioned chalk pens, that are used for pub signs? they won't wash off a blackboard surface, you have to paint over them again...If you can get hold of a defunct venetian blind from somewhere, chop it into pieces, write on with a chalk pen, should be good for a while....

Unashamedly highjacking this thread again - it doesn't solve my tree labelling issue, but I think this is the way I'm going to be going to label my herbs...
