Borrow an installation DVD from anyone who has one All versions of Vista are on the same DVD so it doesn't matter whether you use a Basic, Home, Business or Ultimate DVD or whether it's OEM, retail or upgrade - only whether it's 32bit or 64 bit. What version is installed is determined by the CD key entered.
  • Are you dual booting, or have you used Acronis at all?

Can you get into Safe Mode?

Thanks for the replies. I did use acronis to set up dual booting with ubuntu. Reading the forums on missing winload.exe, it seem ubuntu deleats winload.exe. I can't get into safe mode. I'm using a boot disk to get into the system32 and there is no winload.exe there.I wonder is it in hidding files and foulders. My system is 32bit.

  • Ok which way did you install the O/S, Ubuntu first or Vista first?

What is possibly happening is that your bcedit is pointing to the wrong location ie d:\\ instead of c: for Winload.exe

insert your vista disk and use command prompt to open

First, Boot from your Vista installation CD.

Select your Vista Install from the list in Windows Boot Manager
    Microsoft Vista Setup (x86)
    Microsoft Vista Setup (x64)

    Press enter.

You will then see Windows is Loading Files

Next, the Language Screen will come up. Since you have already selected this option when you installed Vista, just click on Next

Now you will see the Vista Installation Screen

    DO NOT CHOOSE Install Now

Instead, towards the bottom left of the window you will see.

What to know before installing Windows
    Repair your Computer”

Choose and click on Repair your Computer

You will come to the System Recovery Options
Choose Microsoft Windows Vista from the list. Then click Next.

You will now have the option to choose which Recovery Tools you wish to use.

    Choose Command Prompt

    Type in the following

    C:
    bcedit

identify which ID is the Vista id, it will show as Windows under Description, make a note of which number the Vista ID is

    Then type exit

Now type in bcedit /default ID <number of ID>

    type exit and reboot

Thanks a lot for those excellent instructions. The machine is new and came with vista ready to load, i loaded the 32bit os.There is a recovery partition but i can not get into to that either. Someone from an other forum is sending me a recovery disk. When it comes i shall follow your instruction to recover.

I'm using the ubcd4win utility to get on the net and into my machine an excellent free utility with loads of progames so i shall try what you said for now using one of thier programs.

    thank once again.

  • It's worth giving ubcd4win a try, the thing is is that your winload isn't missing, just your boot.ini equivalent is pointing to the wrong place.

I'll be perfectly honest, I wasn't impressed with vista as a beta tester, and still dual booting with xp, with xp as my primary o/s
