A moment's reflection, and fermi for moderator
Comments
-
I've only just seen this thread and must say that I am 100% in favour of 'moderation from within the BR board' and would be more than happy to see fermi appointed as 'moderator'. In my view he is more than ably suited to the role - he has gone through bankruptcy, is a fountain of information for those worried by the 'mechanics' of the process and has always shown the utmost restraint when this board is subjected to division.
Unfortunately, though, I remember this subject coming up before and it actually caused even more division among the regular posters.
There are some quite serious question marks over the way that this board has been, and still is, moderated, and the whole question of moderation needs, in my opinion, looking at - whether for the 'Bankruptcy/DFW Board', 'Loans', 'Reclaiming Bank Charges' or any other forum. All would benefit from a certain 'inside knowledge' when it comes to 'moderation' and all that that process entails.
However, whilst the current level/standard of moderation may leave an awful lot to be desired, this is still one of the very few places, on the net, where we can openly discuss our situation. I wouldn't like to lose it.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

I would rather we were moderated by impartial people who could see both viewpoints.Barclaycard 3800

As one of those who has been in this from ( nearly) the beginning, I wholeheartedly agree that SOMETHING needs to be done about the moderation on here.
If Nearly rich or Plumpmouse should be reading this ......(which I doubt as I have not seen one post from either of them in over 12 months)......then maybe we could have their views.
If moderation was to be done from " within" so to speak, then Fermi would be an ideal candidate as would several others on here.
BTW, we all thought Fermi was a woman at first!!! Sorry mate:o1/11/06 -1/06/07 BSC #42

Unfortunately it's not about differing viewpoints, BH, we are all entitled to those. It's about how we express them and, basically, how we bahave towards those whose 'viewpoint' differs from our own.
I would like to see an 'appeals procedure' in place, where posters could appeal to have 'moderated' posts re-instated as it can be too easy for someone to report a post as 'abusive' simply because it does not agree with that poster's 'viewpoint'. This is where some 'inside experience' would be useful.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I thought Fermi was a female aswell at first!
I can't/won't comment on the credentials of posters but Fermi has done me a couple of huge favours when the site went bonkers.
But, just so everyone understands, the site doesn't have moderators. The board guides are simply there to make things run smoothly. ie their job is to move posts that might be posted in the wrong board, merge threads that are the same etc. They have absolutely no power to delete posts, threads, users etc.
I lurk on here a bit and to be honest from what I've seen (but feel free to correct me) you guys and the board all seem to be pretty self sufficient. However I understand the concerns about the number of tw@ts who decide to cause trouble. Sadly the BR board isn't unique to this problem. It does happen elsewhere.
I don't really know what the hell I'm waffling on about now. :rotfl:
Oh yeah, basically it was just to clarify that even if Fermi or anyone else was granted BG status, it wouldn't solve the concerns that everyone has!
Edit: Thats not to say Fermi shouldn't be a board guide!0 -

Just because I don't post on the BR board often doesn't mean I don't read it when I can and do the thing that I have volunteered for which is not to Moderate but to be a Board Guide to help the board run smoothly.;) I like to think I have an open mind and I although I have no direct experience of bankruptcy I have been in debt and my philosophy is that it could happen to anyone and I was lucky that things got better for me.
If you feel collectively that this board needs more board guides bearing in mind that I don't have time to read every post ( I have a home, a family and a full time job) please feel free to email the forum team and ask for additional resource.
Please also bear in mind it's not my job to deal with abuse and I think the main issues on this board arise from posters having views against bankruptcy, the correct way to handle this is to ignore it and report it to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Please, nr, do not take anything in this thread personally - we do appreciate your role as board guide. Sometimes the roles of board-guides and moderators can become confused. Occasionally, too, there is an intervention by 'forum manager' who has openly stated that he 'can close threads'.
Sometimes, as I'm sure you will agree, it is difficult to ignore posts which are so obviously designed to be 'bankruptcy knocking' and ther could be a viable reason for having some internal input to the role of moderation.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. May i be so bold as to ask for a bit of clarification regarding the role of board guide?
Is it correct that although you have no power to delete posts are you able to lock threads if they have got too far out of hand, until the the moderators can review them and decide what action to take?0 -

I can hide threads that get out of hand and refer them to the Forum team, abuse is dealt with by the abuse team and I rarely need to do anything like this because once it's reported it will be checked.
If someone is abusive and their comments are ignored and left in isolation a) they won't get any reaction will probably get bored and go away and b) it will be easier for the abuse team to just delete one post and the thread can continue.0
