Hi,

I'm currently with Octopus 'Flexible Octopus' for Gas and Electric.
Electricity:
Unit rate 26.76p/kwh
standing charge 43.40p/day

Gas:
Unit Rate: 6.59p/kwh
standing charge 26.16p/day

Is this ok?  Or should i be moving elsewhere or onto another tarrif.  It baffles me so any help would be much appreciated

Do you have a smart meter? Time of Use tariffs (TOU) can be much cheaper than the SVT you're on. Fixed price tariffs are generally more expensive than the SVT at the moment.

Thank you, No we don't have a smart meter (not overly keen on getting one if possible)

I pay about half the SVT rate on the Agile ToU tariff. Sometimes I get paid to use electricity.

Best to ignore the tin-foil hattery regarding smart meters

can i only have a ToU tariff on a smart meter? if so is there anything better for not having a smart meter?

    thank you

Yes. The wholesale price of electricity changes every half-hour. Dumb meters have no time element, so can only measure what you've used but not the price at the time of use, so you get a price that covers both the highs and the lows. With a smart meter you can choose a tariff which has the cheapest electricity at the times you use the most.

    Nope.

[The one exception is for people already on one of the legacy 'comfort' (heating) tariffs, which evidently doesn't apply to you.]

Yes if you are fiddling the dumb meter.

Please note I am not suggesting anyone does this but it is a valid (illegal) reason.

Nope.  You have have Economy 7 on any two-rate meter, even one with a spinning disk.  You can even buy your own approved meter and have it installed by your supplier.
Schedule 7 of the Electricity Act 1989 says that with your supplier's permission you can have your own meter installed and that the supplier cannot refuse unless there are good reasons for doing so.

The very definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Pay to have a meter that cuts you off from the choice of most competitive tariffs, when you could have a smart meter for free.
