As above really.    I can't decide between these two thermostats. I've searched and searched but can't find any comparisons or if they are the same or what. Anyone got any ideas please?

I don't know, but will have a look at them both.
Meanwhile, what sort of programmer or timer do you have on your CH, please?

What do you currently have (thermostat make and model) and why are you replacing it?  What is the thermostat controlling? (gas/oil CH boiler, water heater, electric UFH, etc.,,)?  Note that electric heating may well require a different electrical rating for the thermostat contacts.

Are you confident/qualified/competent to work on mains electrical devices?  Do you know where the mains isolator is for the current thermostat to be able to work safely on it?

The two stats look to be identical in terms of spec and just have styling differences. So price or aesthetics will likely determine which you choose..

I can't see any real difference either, Rodders.

JanChris, a few months back I replaced one of these - can't recall which - for a friend as the display was fading, but they didn't want the same again as they hated the loud changeover click even tho' it was in the hallway.
I suggested they get the Honeywell T4 - which is programmable - as an alternative, and I found a new and unused one on the local Facebook Marketplace for £30! And, the guy even dropped it off at my door
Needless to say, they were pretty chuffed, and - thankfully - the 'click' is much quieter too.
You can almost certainly pick up a new T4 on an eBay auction for around the same price - ~£50 - as either of the other 'stats. A significant improvement over the plain 'stat.
The T4, as I recall, as well as being 'programmable' - but you can always have it 'manual' like the other stats - also shows both the 'set' and 'actual room' temps, so that's a great bit of useful info; you can see how far off achieving your desired temp is. And the last time I saw the guy I did this for, he said it had a feature (forget what it's called) where it works out when the heating has to come on to get the place to temp for when they want. Ie, in colder weather, it'll come on earlier, and vice-versa. So, more comfy, and saves energy.
Yes, you will need to replace the mounting plate - it's peculiar to the T4 - but good chance you'd need to do that anyway with your first choices? The same two mounting screw holes should do, tho'.
If you can wire a plug, you can wire this. BUT, you need to KNOW and UNDERSTAND what it is you are doing. And fully cut the power...

  • I have a conventional gas boiler with separate hot water tank.  Honeywell programmer with no built in thermostat.   I'm changing from a Honeywell analogue wall thermostat in the hall with a wheel.  I'm changing because it's not very accurate and Id like to be able to see the room temp too without having to balance or tape a separate thermometer nearby.

Thank you for all your information 👍🏻
I am in an over 60s council bungalow, so I apparently can't get anything too fancy as the council won't maintain anything that should break or malfunction if they didn't install it.  Obviously they will still do radiators and boiler.

I have recently lost my husband and although I'm only 64 I seem to be in nearly all the time at the moment. I just seem to be constantly up and down to the hall thermostat popping it up and down all the time.   It would be great to do a smart one from my phone but
not sure if replacing thermostat and also the programmer (with a receiver) from Tado would complicate things council-wise if there was a heating problem. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Sorry for your loss, JanChris.
As you say, if you change the wall stat to anything other than what is currently there, then they are unlikely to maintain that part. And I guess there's also the risk - tho' it should be small - that they could try and blame your new, more complex controls.
I have to say, 'Smart' controls are just superb. Again, you can usually find them more reasonably priced if you bide your time and try eBay auctions, but this obviously runs more risk as they won't be warranted.
I'm not familiar with Tado, only Hive. (The obvious Hive model for you is the hard-to-obtain, and stupidly-expensive wired SLT5. This doesn't need a separate WiFi receiver but connects to your router directly.)
To be honest, if you are concerned about warranty and maintenance, then I think it would be best to have a sparky fit your chosen device.

And Hive are dropping support for a lot of the older stuff (not just boiler controls), so there is no guarantee that any app (or web connected service) will work in a year or three.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Well it's time to put this discussion to bed!
The one I went for was.....
    neither of them!! 😁
I bought the Tado wired smart thermostat V3 kit which connects wirelessly to the router.
Removed the Honeywell and wired in the Tado...works a treat from the app.
The best bit was that it was £179 from Tado and I got it from Screwfix at £109👍🏻
    Thanks for your help guys.

    Well done
So, there's a Tado that doesn't need a separate receiver. I wonder how this differs from the one in the other Tado thread?

It doesn't need a receiver because it doesn't move around the house. It's wired into the wall and the little dongle bit that they call a 'bridge' joins to the router....I guess that just brings the app into play.
