Please help with charge on deeds from old Citibank mortgage

Hi,

Asking for a friend whose father passed away recently and he inherited his home. He is planning to sell it but has hit an issue with an outstanding charge on the deeds.

His father used to work for Citibank and had a mortgage through them. He paid it off about 15 years ago with his redundancy package but for some reason the charge was not removed.

Citibank have now exited the residential mortgage market and he's struggling to locate anyone who can help.

Can anyone offer some advice on how to get this charge removed.

Thanks

Your friend's solicitor should be offering helpful advice, and if they can't then maybe he should find a different solicitor...

Does whichever company who had the charge still exist? If so, first stop is to contact them - and if that doesn't work, go through their complaints process (sometimes necessary to get past first stage of "computer says no").

Citibank are not offering the products that they once did but still exist

I don't see why this is a problem. Has your solicitor never seen a charge before?

He has tried calling Citibank but is given the run-around. Apparently nobody works in "high street" banking and they are clueless to help.

His solicitor says Citibank needs to remove the charge but I thought there were other ways. I've seen personal interest charges removed but not a financial institution, but there must surely be a way. As you say, maybe another solicitor is required.

    Thanks.

The only other way is going to court. As I said, go through the complaints process and eventually it will get to the desk of somebody with a clue.

Citibank must have an army of solicitors. You just need someone to check the records and hopefully find that no money is owed.

Maybe a letter before court action is needed.
