Hello
I have a modern A rated combi boiler and 9 rads fitted in my house (1970's 3 bed semi ) and I am thinking about fitting a gas fire in our lounge
We used to have a radiant gas fire however when central heating was installed the radiant fire was taken out
Currently in most of the day , so run central heating at 17c , however thinking that as I spend most time in lounge it might be a cheaper option to use a radiant gas fire to heat 1 room and use central heating less
Todays gas use is 40 kwh having heating on from 9am till 7 (10 hours ) so far , not sure if this is too high ? 3 bed semi , newish boiler and rads , loft insulated however no cavity wall insulation ; A rated double glazing , outside temp approx. 3c
Would value your help
Regards Steve

It depends on how much the gas fire costs to install as to whether it will be economic.
Why not turn up the thermostatic radiator valve in the living room? If you also reduce the flow temperature on the boiler, it might cost you nothing, or even turn a profit.1 -
56kWh here, thermostat set to 18C in a 1950s 3-bed semi with CW insulation and slightly skimpy loft insulation.meat_n2_reg said:Todays gas use is 40 kwh having heating on from 9am till 7 (10 hours ) so far , not sure if this is too high ?
40 sounds about right for your house.

40 sounds about right for your house.Around 45KWh here with a temperature of 19-20°C - Late 1920s semi with a ton of loft insulation, new DG windows, and partial IWI.But my CH is "on" 24/7 with an overnight temperature of 17.5°C and 19-20°C during the daytime. Total burn time today, about 5 hours at 25% modulation (6-7KW ?). Not brilliant, and there is scope to improve on that.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

A gas fire is no bad thing to have in case there is a power cut and your gas boiler stops working.Reed2
