corgi homecare contract cancelation issues

We have sold our house and are in the process of moving which involves closing down existing services etc and during this process I have just attempted to cancel my homeware plan which has 3 months left to run.
Firstly, when I attempted to call homeware several times over the last few days using their listed phone line I was faced with the usual automated voice advising that there was no-one able to take my call then disconnected.
In exasperation I cancelled my direct debit and within hours I have had OVO/homecare e mails and just a couple of minutes ago a telephone call from them advising me that they will charge me a cancellation fee of £120 for this.
Bearing in mind I pay a monthly sum of £25 for this contract and the contract comes up for renewal on the 1st of marchI was wondering if they are legally allowed to do this?

I expect they are, yes. It sounds like you committed to an annual contract rather than a monthly one.  By cancelling the payment you haven't cancelled the contract, you've breached it.

But your terms and conditions will tell you for sure.

Why do people think that cancelling payment method is the same as cancelling the contract.
