Not wishing to get creepy, there's another forumite called Krakkkers. You'd have thought they would go together well, but they don't often post in the same threads so I've not managed to make that joke yet :D

The cost difference of heating a single room with electric and the entire house with gas is usually very small. (But a 2-300w IR wall panel is probably your cheapest option )

If it was actually On you would think it would always be firing at 16c and that the heated rooms would be 5c hotter anyway than the unheated room were the stat is.

Why can't you insulate your internal walls and ceilings? Which are the coldest areas?

You can line the walls/ceilings with isulated plasterboard this would definitely help. Floors can be isulated too either by lifting them and laying isulation underneath or raising the floors throughout the 1st level of the house.

Some expense and hassle there obviously but it would pay for itself as it would retain heat and make you feel warmer.

I think some homes are close to hopeless to insulate but even then I would would make the main living area the best it can be.

Thanks all again.  Yes I need to do a complete assessment on the house.  Finally managed to stay up until the automated heating had gone off for the night and discovered the baseline temperature at night is set to 14c.  No wonder the place is so cold in the morning!!!  So step one is to try and translate the thermostat manual into plain English so I can get a better minimum going.

And as for you @dealyboy - while your comment made me smile I'm sorry to inform you that I prefer my flirts a little less mature.  Just ask the OH!
