Holidays

A couple of months ago I paid a deposit to travel to Egypt next August on holidays with TUI, flying from Newcastle International airport.  It is now coming to light that TUI has cancelled all flights from Newcastle International airport to Egypt between May and September 2024.  We are now being told that we will have to fly from Glasgow.

I have checked the TUI website today and it shows no flights from Newcastle but I can see that if I book to fly same day, same holiday next year from Glasgow I can save approx £700 on website prices. Will TUI honour this reduction in price?  I will still have the cost of travelling 2 hours to Glasgow airport instead of a 20 minute drive, overnight stay and 14 day car parking.

What are my options, what is TUI liability for this sufficient change and why are they not informing people who have already booked.

Is my best option to cancel, lose £200 and rebook saving approx £400.

If TUI are telling you that you'll have to fly from Glasgow, then they should waive any cancellation fees and refund the deposit IMHO, but failing that, they should reduce the price under regulation 11(7) of the Package Travel Regulations:

I think you'll lose more than £200 if you cancel - the full deposit will be more ?

I would have thought that if they've made a change as big as that then you should be able to get a full refund and then rebook whatever you please. Otherwise shouldn't they be paying the cost of rerouting to Glasgow anyway?

However given that they've not yet told you of the change then you should probably wait until they do as any action you take before then is going to be seen as you deciding to change of your own accord.

I'd probably be contacting them and telling them you've heard this is happening and wonder what is going on - it may be that they have a Plan B for those already booked or are working on one.

Of course once they announce and process the change (if it happens) then it may well be that flights out of GLA aren't as cheap any more.

Have you been told directly by TUI that you will not be able to fly from Newcastle?
  • Just as well you are not going today - GLA is closed to flights.

Was it Newcastle to Hurghada?  They seem to still be operating twice weekly Newcastle to Sharm el Sheikh in August.

TUI Holidays class a change of departure airport as a major change.

Has TUI informed you that your original holiday from Newcastle is no longer available?
Have they offered you a full refund?
    Terms and Conditions (tui.co.uk)

Occasionally, we may have to make a major change to your holiday such as a change of destination, a downgrade of your accommodation by one full star rating, a change in flight time by more than 12 hours or a change of UK departure airport. A change in flight time that we need to make within 24 hours before you are due to fly is not a major change unless the time changes by more than 24 hours.

If we tell you about a major change after you book your holiday, you can accept the new arrangements offered by us; or accept a replacement holiday from us of the same or similar standard and price at the date of the change (we’ll always refund the difference in price if the replacement holiday is a lower price at the date of the change), if we are able to offer you one; or cancel your holiday with us and receive a full refund.
