    Hello OP

It seems you've notified them twice the goods are available for collection and they've failed twice to collect so pop the item safely in a box in a cupboard somewhere, after 6 years it's yours :)

If you want it gone but don't want to wait for failed collections you could ask the seller to give you the money to return it via the Post Office but by what you've said that's unlikely to happen.

Another alternative is to give the seller one last chance to collect and note if the collection fails you'll auction the item on eBay and give them what's left after eBay fees and postage.

They may not be happy about that but you are an involuntary bailee and your only obligations are to take reasonable care of the goods, notify the owner (the seller) that you have the goods for collection with the option to sell if they fail to collect after reasonable communication.

Sadly it's a thankless task for you, unless they can't be bothered and just let you keep the item or 6 years passes by which point they can no longer make a claim.

Just to add to the above don’t send it back at your own cost , give the seller a reasonable time frame to collect then just put it aside and forget about it.

Don’t put too much effort into this, don’t contact seller , wait for them to contact you and let them do all the running about.

  • Does the fact that eBay have stated that the item can be kept by the seller have any impact on the case?

You said in your original post that eBay told you to keep the item.

I think I would have told the seller that and suggested they sort it out with eBay.

If I give the seller another chance and the delivery company doesn't turn up what will happen if I ignore the seller. I've contacted parcelforce and they said if a collection is booked it can still be cancelled on the day of collection and will still show on the tracking so I think this is what the seller is doing.
In case of any issues later on, which I doubt, make sure you keep every single message you get, screen shot if necessary and store.

If seller contacts you and offers a new collection day/time, if convenient say yes, if not decline. Keep your responses to a few words at most - play them at their own game. So if they say for instance Parcel force will be collecting on the 4th - respond briefly 'yes - as long as before 3pm'  type of message. If it isn't convenient respond with 'collection not possible that day- can do the 5trh before 4pm'. Seller has to collect at your convenience not theirs.

I opened a dispute on ebay for item not as described and the seller refused to pay for the return then they didn't respond to the case so I went on live chat and they closed the case in my favour and they told me to keep the item.
In that case, keep the item (or sell it, or bin it, or give it away). Make sure that you keep the message from eBay saying that you can keep it, but the matter is closed as far as you are concerned.

(If the seller did ever contact you again, you can just say that the matter is between them and eBay and the Ts&Cs that they signed up to).
