Is it just me? ( Smart Meter)

  • I don't think I will move home in my lifetime, when I die my son will be left with the problem and he is even less interested than I am.

I am afraid 'Smart' is one of those words that riles me, 'Eco' and 'Plus ' are others.

I guess when my TV packs up I will have to have a Smart TV, why? and the last thing on earth I would like to own is a Smart watch.

I just don't want anything else in my kitchen. I am not interested in what appliance uses what amount of electricity. I just can't be doing with it. OK so I'm not saving the planet but until my small life makes a difference I am very happy as I am.

The IHD - the little LCD panel mock "Einstein" character bandies around on the TV -  is not the meter.

It is for some useful - for others it just goes straight in the drawer - unplugged - once meter fitter tests it (assuming you are given one at all)

And the meter itself saves on other costs and provides data not only to supplier but grid level planning.

And above all - will in all likelihood be a condition to any non standard tariffs - even a standard 12m fix is normally contingent on having - or agreeing to have fitted in near future - a smart meter.

And schemes - like those paying users to save power during peak demand - wont be open to you - without one.

Unless you're planning on dying in the next 1-2 years, you don't really have a choice. Your supplier will replace your end-of-life meter with a smart meter.

I have dumb meters and can't see the advantages (FOR ME) of having a smart meter

! Am a very low user, total costs about £800 per year dual fuel

I live in a flat, don't want and couldn't afford an AV

The gas meter is outside and the electric inside, opposite ends of the block so may not talk to each other

I would still physically read them every week like I do now as I can't trust either to not go faulty

I have lived here almost a year and not had a problem yet these boards are full of problems with smart meters

I'm not against them but can't see a reason to have one although there maybe times when I could save money on certain tariffs I don't want or need the hassle

People come here with problems to be solved so that's not surprising.

The My meter works perfectly threads unsurprisingly don't exist.

Where as we get equal smart and dumb meter issues.

What hassle would you have over reading the meters as you do if they don't connect to each other whilst saving money on smart meter tariffs? What hassle is there?
  • OK I have the internet and Sky TV but what else do I need not want?

I want to watch live TV or a programme I have recorded nothing else I have no need for even more channels than Sky has, I probably never watch more than a dozen of them but having a sports mad son in the house it has to be.

What I want is a simple life why does all this 'smart' have to be complicated?

It isn't. It can save you a considerable amount of money, though.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion about "smart" "eco" or "plus", but you watched the video on the email, how do you do that without a smart phone, or even better a smart computer. The IHD is a gimmick, a meter is a meter it measures your usage , I wouldn't fancy going outside to read my meter on Friday morning to send my readings in, the meter will do it, having said that I will go out in the freezing cold to read the meter for my own records and I need to put my bins out and post my neighbour's birthday card through his letter box .

Edited: Oh and because I have  a smart meter I got £8.78 back on my bill for the DFS scheme and I expect to get circa 50% more today.
