In Highfields there are some great little shops, with some bargains to be had. If you go to Evington Road theres the animal rescue charity shop, where jeans and trousers are £1.50 to give you a guide of prices. Tahmena discount stores on St. Stephen's road has lots of kids' clothes and also this season's long 'hippy' skirts with loads of embroidery on them for £9.99 - got a bright orange one today as a treat cos Ive saved a lot of dosh this week!
Down Evington road further is Stylex fashions, with some nice leather sandals for about £7, and Indian blouses for a fiver each! If you drive or have a wally trolley then heres the place to come for sacks of onions for less than 2 quid.

  • my girlfriend lives near Soar Valley. Leicester isa lovely town to go to for a day trip, Pilot meswear clothing have a great sale in their mens desinger range, puts London to shame.

have heard that Highfields is a bit of a ghetto, but I was brought up in a inner city area in London, as a result very strretwise, from what i know Highfields has a community feel to it.

and as for drugs , you canget them anywhere , even in stoneygate

Don't get me wrong, there are parts of Leicester that are fine, but they are usually well away from the city centre area.

I'm sure there are loads of bargains to be had down Saffron Lane - another dump.

For me Leicester has nothing about it - no character.

In it's defence, Coventry which is nearer to me now is even worse than Leicester.

Farmers' market last weds of every month, fruit and veg is best off the market. Check out Ethel Austin near the clocktower for cheap basics for kids, and they do wash up ok, things I have from there are vests, t-shirts, pants, tracksuits, alll bargains even when full priced.

I see Gogsboy must have been bored through the night - maybe some of those storms kept you awake and you thought you'd click on my username to find some of my other posts.

I was born in the Leicester General Hospital in 1981.
I went to school in South Wigston - at Parklands Primary School, then next door at South Wigston High School, then up the road at Guthlaxton College.

I moved to Leamington in February 2001, so that makes 20 years and 1 week of me living in Leicester. Somehow I might be qualified to say what I think of Leicester.

As some other users might know, I support Leicester City Football Club. I always believe in supporting the team from which you were born - or one near to it.

I am proud of my country - just putting the fact that for me Leicester was and still is a drab city - Leamington Spa isn't a large place but at least it has character. People come from far away to Warwick and Leamington. The nearest I got to Leicester city centre in the last two years was the LCFC club shop a few weeks ago to get my new home shirt. (That's right Gogsy - I was in Leicester - my family still live there).

So, I have connections to Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston. Oadby is the only one that is a decent place. Wigston in places is ok, South Wigston is a ghetto.

Is 20 years and a week enough for me to say what I think or do I need to justify my view some more?
  • Hi Daveboy
Couldnt agree with you more. I work a mile away from the schools you went to. And live around a mile away from them to by Fosse Park.
Ive always lived in Leicester and have chosen to bring my daughter up here.
I used to be a foxy lady and was also born in 81. Funny hey!

    Foxy lady indeed :D

I know what you meant - a City fan.

I had the pleasure, or was it displeasure, of having to drive through South Wigston on Saturday after having visited my mum and brother.

For those that know the area I drove from Wigston so over the bridge where the train line is underneath - near the swimming baths. First sign of South Wigston is a sign with graffiti on it. Get further in and you know you're in trouble when the shops are either empty, boarded up or have metal grills on the windows.

It was a pleasure to reach the M69 to come home. My mum lives in Wigston Harcourt and I hate Pork Pie Island so going via the boarded up County Arms is the way I go home.

I stand by my earlier comment, there are some great places in Leicester. Or should I say Leicestershire. I can't think of anywhere I'd be happy living within about 5 miles of the city centre.

That isn't to say that those who are happy there shouldn't be happy. I just hated the place and got away. Leamington is a great area and I'm glad that four years ago I decided to come here.
