    There is a contract.

    Except in a few special cases a contract doesn't have to be written or signed. A contract is just a 'meeting of minds', an agreement between two people to do something, so a handshake or a nod of the head is fine.

    99% of contracts are made like this. Of course a problem with a verbal contract might arise afterwards about exactly what was agreed.

    That's still a contract, just an unwritten one.

    Inflation was equally high in Jan when the OP made the booking, if the kennel had taken a £160 refundable deposit then both parties could have withdraw from the contract penalty free allowing the kennel to cancel the booking and offer a new one at the higher price, they opted not to do this in their interest so inflation is their tough luck.
