Starling banking app

Does anyone here use the Starling banking app.
If so does my mobile phone need to be connected to the internet to use the Starling banking app?
I have been using the app for over a year and when a customer makes a payment I am notified whether I am at home where I have wifi or when I am out working. When I out working as a window cleaner I asuume my mobile is not connected to the internet.

I ask because  my home phone line and internet were down from Saturday to Tuesday and I was not notified of a payment until the interent was working again.

Yes, how else do you think the app gets to know you've spent something? Your mobile would normally be connected to the internet by 3G/ 4G/ 5G when you aren't at home and aren't on a public wifi or such

If your phone is able to connect to the Internet by WiFi it should also connect by mobile data, assuming it's not disabled and is included in whatever plan or PAYG you're using. The app does need connection to update and notify you.

It will not work if the mobile does not have a signal. Use Google get instructions on how to tell if your type of phone (Android, Samsung or iPhone) is connected to the internet.

It will clearly need internet access to be able to be able to receive transaction notifications from Starling's server. That could be via wifi or a mobile data connection. If your home phone and internet were down then it's possible that the phone could have connected to your router and not been able to connect to the internet, but normally phones are clever enough to work that out and connect via mobile data.

It sounds like you may have mobile data turned off, or don't have it included in your mobile plan, but surely you'd be aware of that as email, whatsapp etc wouldn't work either.
  • Thank-you all.
As you can tell I am not that up with technology.
I used an old fashioned phone until I needed to buy a smart phone to use the Starling app.
    I do have a motog62 5G using Android 13.
I had a look in settings, data server and there is a long list of app. Most are turned off for unrestricted data but I have made sure the Starling app is ticked.

I do not use any social media or email on the phone, I use the laptop for emails.

    Sorry I am slightly confused.
Reading that you get banking updates at home over Wi-Fi and when you are out and about. I took that to mean you get updates using mobile data when out and about.
When you didn’t get updates over the weekend because your internet was down, I thought that meant you didn’t have a mobile signal at home. The mobile signal at home should allow updates if you can get updates when you are out and about.
So that begs the question have you ever had a mobile signal at home? Or was it a temporary glitch with your mobile data? Which you might not have noticed as you always use Wi-Fi.
Having I understood your problem, or got the wrong end of the stick?

If you are getting notifications at home on wifi and out and about on mobile data then it sounds like the setup is correct.

When you are home, turn off wifi on the phone and see if you can access Starling via the mobile data. It could be that you don't get a mobile signal at home (calls and texts would then likely be coming over wifi as well as the data).

There is one more possibility regarding your mobile data.
Different networks perform differently regarding mobile data. It is possible that whilst you are at home, phone calls and texts work but the data connection for apps is poor.
I experienced this last week. I bought tickets to a show using Ticketmaster. Before the show, away from the venue, I could log into the Ticketmaster app and see the tickets. At the venue I could not log onto ticketmaster because the app on my phone could not connect to the ticketmaster system. Fortunately I was going along with a friend who also had ticketmaster but was on a different network so could log in to tticketmaster and get us into the show.
The network I was using was O2 and my friend is on EE.
If you let us know your mobile phone network, you may get some advice on connectivity issues.

Caveat: I know it is possible there were more O2 users there trying to connect than EE users, but in my experience O2 connectivity for calls, texts and data has been worse than EE's connectivity in the areas I need them to work.
