Sounds hugely scammy to me - he should walk away, and quickly!

Tell him to send me £1000 for expert advice on avoiding scams. Sounds plausible?

While Coinbase is a real company, this sounds like it is a scam.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Scammers will continue to make fortunes whilst this level of naivety persists.  How obvious does it need to be?
  • Oh dear. Your partner is being scammed and chances are this isn't the only one.

It will be difficult but please sit down with them, watch some videos about scammers and go through all the finances to check for other scams.

Explain that they are probably on a list and will be targeted in the future, they really need to be very wary if any calls they receive no matter how genuine they seem
  • That’s not Coinbase. Scam

I wouldn't recommend that your partner puts any money into the real Coinbase either, unless they know what they are doing, which it sounds like they don't.

Agree, from your description it is very obviously a scam. He should not contact them again. If they call, hang up immediately without speaking to them, or better still block the numbers they use.

Any money he has already sent them is lost, the important thing at this point is not to lose any more.

If anyone else contacts him out of the blue trying to persuade him to buy investments, those will be scanned as well.

And those who call him up claiming they can get his money back from the original scam will also be scammers.
