2x speed camera fines

I’ve received 2 separate fines for exceeding speed in a 30mph zone, 8 minutes apart from the same camera van (going up one way, then back down later on). Both have offered only 3 points and £100 fine.

I am very aware and more so after reading other threads that I am entirely responsible for my actions, no I shouldn’t have been speeding and no I do not have a defence in Court therefore do not intend to take this route as I am clear it will result in higher fines.

I only have a simple question that I’m wondering if anybody can help to answer. Would I be able to ask West Midlands Police to deal with the matter as one offence given the time frame and same camera? I would be happy to pay the £200 fine, but more so wanting to prevent 6 points overall. Again - I completely know I deserve the 6 points if this is the case, all I’m asking is whether this is an option.

As we major on private parking tickets here, PePiPoo will be your best bet for police tickets. If you do receive a ticket, register there but please note that a hotmail address won't work - try using a throwaway gmail account instead if you do have trouble registering and post a new thread; here's your link:
Have a read through some of the other threads and use the NiP Wizard there before you post your own to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need to post redacted photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the police (both sides, if appropriate) as they need to see all the small print.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

  • There is no harm in asking the force in question to treat this as a single offence, but don't be surprised if they refuse.

There is a concept of a "continuous offence", so if you were detected speeding twice and in between your speed didn't drop below the speed limit, it would be perverse to be punished twice for a single offence. However if your speed did drop below the speed limit, then that offence stopped being committed, and that any subsequent speeding can rightly be seen as a second offence. None of this is enshrined in law or even guidance however.

Since you changed direction between the detections, it's pretty likely your speed did drop below the speed limit and therefore arguing a continuous offence might be rejected.
