Contaxtless payment "voided" but still charged.

Paid for item by contact less HSBC debit card, vendor said payment was voided so paid again. (This is someone I know and trust)
Two payments showed as pending on the mobile app but I assumed one would disappear, but 3 days later both were shown as debits on my account. Checked again with vendor who said they had only one payment, the other having been voided. As the amount was small she agreed to refund me. She also said 2 or 3 other customers had the same thing happen recently.
So the vendor has lost and either her bank or mine has gained.
Can anyone suggest what exactly might have happened here?

Can't say what happened, but it might have solved itself with time.
But if it persisted it is the bank's responsibility not the vendor's and it should be taken up with them.
Have you or the vendor asked your or their bank?0 -

Could just be a simple connection issue.
If the transaction was truly voided, it would have printed a slip, even on contactless that they should give to you to prove it has.Life in the slow lane1 -
We had a problem when using a contactless Chase debit mobile payment at a hotel in Berlin. They were taking a 50 euro deposit against usage of the minibar and restaurant - effectively like reserving a block of credit on a credit card. They tried a couple of times and said it hadn't gone through. We later found that it had. When we checked out, not having used the services, the hotel were unable to find the two debits to reverse them. Long story short, the debits eventually disappeared off our account after 30 days as the hotel didn't actually try to claim any of the 100 euros they'd reserved on the cards. It may be that your voided payment will drop off after 7 or 30 days (dates given to us by Chase).

It did print a slip which she showed me but I didn't study it, didn't have my reading glasses handy and as I said I know and trust her. If that means it was truly voided then where is the missing money?born_again said:

Haven't contacted HSBC they're probably busy right now ; ) anyway it's a small amount. Just curious how the system works.

They were only authorisations not actual debits. This is why to never use debit cards for hotels or car rentals where possible.Slinky said:We had a problem when using a contactless Chase debit mobile payment at a hotel in Berlin. In my case they are actual debits. They now show on my PDF statement.
I would like to know how this happened but as I am not now out of pocket it's not worth contacting HSBC.0 -
Contact HSBC, have your refund and give that money to the vendorSailbad said:In my case they are actual debits. They now show on my PDF statement.
