I had a similar issue a few years ago with my wife's 2010 very low mileage Kia Picanto. Unfortunately we didnt allow any 'shopping around' time and needed to get the MoT done. Cost us nearly £500. Ouch.
Thanks for all the replies guys. So have called around a few places and seems the bulk of the cost is the belt from VW (£450). The labour is 1-2 hours so not much in it between different places. Nowhere will entertain using a reclaimed / refurbished belt as safety critical (fair enough). I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet. And keep a closer eye on the belts in future!
What make car is it? At a main BMW main dealer you could be looking at £400 for labour, 2 hours, to fit and £200 for the new belt.
Not sure I'd want a seat belt from a breaker's yard unless I'd seen it first and also the car to see if it had been involved in a crash where the seat belts were used.
I remember maintaining my cars in the 1970s with parts sourced from breakers yards. The sort where you had to climb up stacked cars with tools in your hands to remove the bit you wanted.
As I pulled the door open on one stacked above the other, the interior looked almost wholly burned out except for a person's shape on the drivers seat upholstery that hadn't been damaged in the fire
I had the same issue. They wouldn't give me a price to repair. The MOT tester recommended I get one from a scrapyard. They offered to fit it if I couldn't do it myself. Using the part number on the belt I had it ordered from ebay before I left the MOT centre. £14.99 with 48 hour delivery. Easy to install.
