Google account verification

Hi.  A member of the family is in hospital & their phone has gone AWOL.  I have bought a new phone & EE have sent us a replacement SIM card with the same original phone number.  I am trying to set up the phone & have the persons Google account email & password but Google are sending a verification code to his old phone seemingly.  Do they send this by text?  If so why isn't it being received on the new phone with the replacement SIM using the original existing phone number?  EE have cancelled the SIM in the missing phone.  Obviously at present I am unable to get into Google Play in the first instance to download WhatsApp.

Depends on how it was set up. They don't send codes they just ask you on your phone if it's you trying to sign somewhere else. You tap 'Yes it was me' and that's it. Sounds like that's the case here. I don't think it's anything to do with the sim, but the device itself.
Try logging in on line and go from there. You should be able to remove the old phone from the account also.

Remove the old device from that Google account: https://myaccount.google.com/intro/security

Thanks Bonhomie but that link requires sign in & the same afore mentioned issue of the security code being sent to the old phone.

I get verification codes by email to a different account so it may have been set up that way  If it was text you would get that on the SIM with the same number no matter what phone it was in.

OK...thanks, not sure how but I am now able to sign in on the new phone. It's a mystery!

There was also nothing stopping you setting up another Google account to download whatsapp
