Having narrowed down my preference to getting something from Samsung I'm now pondering what the difference is with these 4 available from Currys.  (frankly my least favourite place to buy nearly anything but it's an easy compare)

Tablets - Cheap Tablet Deals | Currys

So prices go from £169 to £229, size is the same, 32 GB or 64 GB (more is better right?), 1 is 4G (so?)

It seems to me that given they appear (to me) that they are virtually identical (other than the 32/64 GB) it would make sense to get the cheapest 64 GB one.  Right?  No?  Why?

If you don't want 4G connection then yes that will do fine.
Memory isn't a massive consideration as you can expand that up to 1TB with an SD card.
However, it is a budget tablet and is slow to charge and sometimes has performance problems when the battery is low. If that's not going to phase you it'll be OK.
Also remember it's coming up for it's 2nd birthday, so, it's probably only due another 2 OS updates.

all valid points the A8 is a nice general use tablet, if you have a samsung phone and  account  setting it up on the same  samsung account makes  using  the phone;s mobile data ( assuming  no prohibition on tethering) fairly painless

Sorry to sound thick but why would I want a 4G connection?

I don't have a Samsung phone but do have a Motorola.  Does that make things much more difficult?

The 4G connection would mean that the tablet can connect to data using its own sim-card / GSM signal rather than only via wi-fi.  The sim-card is probably not included and you will need a data plan.

It should make no difference to the tablet whether it is seeing wi-fi from a home network or a mobile hotspot from a phone.  Most phones have wi-fi hotspot as a feature - I know that all the Motorola smart phones we have had over the years have hotspot functionality.  You might want to check your phone does and that your phone contract permits data sharing over hotspot.

(On my Motorola, the hotspot is available simply by swiping down from the top of the screen.)

a 4G connection  would, with a sim card and data plan  allow the tablet to function as 'on line' anywhere there is a mobile signal if there is no wifi...

it would be  slightly less seamless to connect to another  manufacturer;s device as a hotspot...meaning a coupleof extra taps on each device
