EDF Smart Meter problem

I moved into my house after my mum passed away and there is a smart meter with EDF. I've been taking the readings for some time now daily, as I am not sure it is working correctly. The 'price per hour now' varies vastly from day to day and some days seem to have higher readings which don't make sense - for example - a day when we have not used any machines (washing, tumble etc.) sometimes show a lower reading than on days when we do use them.
I have contacted EDF countless times and am told I need to do a test where I have to turn everything off for 30 minutes and see if the actual meter still goes round. I haven't done this yet, but I have been told that if I asked someone to come and check the meter they will charge me £80.
Am I looking at this in the wrong may, i.e. the different readings make sense etc.

Can you give us your readings (in kWh not £) from the Smart Meter itself - the one in an outdoor meter box or garage not the in House Display that's in your (edit) kitchen please.

I suspect you are looking at the in-home display (IHD), not the smart meter.
The "price per hour now" is an instantaneous reading and will depend on eg. your fridge compressor running or not.
Does the IHD produce a daily total for electricity use, looking back for the past week? Are these numbers more in line with your expectations?
Can you read the smart meter itself, rather than the IHD? If you need help with this, let us know the model and we can find you a guide.

Are you looking at the price being charged (in pence per kWh), the instantaneous power being drawn (kW) or the cumulative energy that's been used (kWh)?

Varies by how much?  Was your mum on a TOU (time of use) tarrif?  e.g. economy 7.

Or are you looking at the in-house-display rather than meter which, depending on your version and configuration, could be showing kWh at that very moment in time rather than cumulatively?

    - for example - a day when we have not used any machines (washing, tumble etc.) sometimes show a lower reading than on days when we do use them.
That sounds like the cumulative daily value.
