Quick response and to no great surprise the answer was to open a F&S account. Once I'd done that the 'Collect fees outside the account' option became available. I have given them feedback on how a short simple message could point folks in the right direction.

One useful bit of further info from their reply, they don't sell units until the o/s fees exceed £50. It will take me a few years to reach that level! So I could've continued paying by debit card as they arose (as @NedS suggested) without worrying if I missed a payment that they might sell units. I have also set it so that I would be notified prior to any units being sold. Dropping a fiver into the F&S every 3-4 months will be less faff.

    Thanks again all, much appreciated.
