£50K but if I speak to my manager and you can sign today we can probably do a bargain deal of £12K but only tonight.....
We have painful memories of this.

A relative offered to buy us double-glazing in our new, first house, so we asked a national chain to send someone around and all they did was describe in patronising detail how double-glazing worked (we're science lecturers).

He would have offered us a deal if we signed to day and virtually had a nervous breakdown when we told hime we weren't the buyers, the buyer was elsewhere and we doubted we could contact them that day.

No sale, one frustrated salesman, a furious call to the double-glazing chain about their wasting our time, and a firm resolve to never contact them again.

Do you have to replace wood with wood?  Is the house in a conservation area, as that may restrict what you can do.
Thanks, PVC will be fine as it's not in a conservation area.

I don't think the vendor would mind if your son asked for a window sales person to visit and measure up?  They will know that the windows need replacing - and could well be moving because they cannot afford it.  I had to move because I couldn't afford to replace my roof. It is unlikely the vendor will negotiate on the price as the state of the windows was obvious when your son viewed and made his offer.

If the frames were OK I would have suggested having the glass replaced - I moved into this bungalow in the spring, by autumn I found that three of the bay windows were blown.  I've just paid about £180 for each pane of glass to be replaced.
Thank you - it sounds like you have a difficult time having to move because of the roof, 'though I like the idea of a bungalow & no stairs.  We spotted that they needed doing soon but didn't realise how urgent it was or that it would be all of them plus all the sills.  I agree about getting windows fixed - we've done that here & it saves so much hassle.  There were a lot of big jobs to do so we were taking the extent of it in, and still weren't aware of how many 'red' ones; still getting our heads around it all.

The sills are part of the windows, Don't talk about them or they may decide to charge them as an extra.

The only time it would be an extra is if they were cracked stone or concrete sills and needed replacing.

Or do you mean internal sills..? If they can't be filled and painted they can be replaced before or after, But before would be better so they can do the trim and silicone to them.
  • My son who has a standard 3 bed terraced house in Cardiff has just been quoted 31k for 9 windows, 2 doors and all guttering fascia’s and soffits, but “ if you sign today we’ll do it for 23k”. Unfortunately he fell for it! Just as well he has a 14 day cooling off period, as this job should cost no more than 12k. I think this practice is criminal

One thing we're really struggling to find is an estimate of new windows costs - it needs new double glazed windows and sills throughout (old ones are wooden & rotting away).

If you google something like replacement windows online quote you should find some sites that have interactive price calculators for each window.

You can provide rough sizes, choose a style, choose options - and it will give an immediate price estimate.

If the site asks for a name and contact details first, I guess some people might give fake info, to stop salespeople hassling them.

But there are also sites that gather all the info, and look like they're going to give you an estimate, but then just say that a salesperson will contact you.

  • I suspect GreenTed is sorted now, suebaggs resurrected a year old post   :/
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.
