Vodafone cancellation notice near end of 2 year contract?

Hi,

So I dont have a contract of my own due to having a work mobile, but 2 years ago I took out a contract for my son, now in uni, but the account in my name, and app set up for my phone (obv restricted from additional spends outside of contract)

Anyway, it says now Contract ends in 29 days when I load up on the app.  Frustratingly today i'm not receiving OTP codes for logging in on the website, but trying to check now what options are?

1.  I see options for choosing to cancel now? It warns about early termination fees. If I start this now tho, I take it it wouldn't actually happy until 30 days from now, and be a pro rata few days at the very end.  Presume the number will then come to an end rather than shift to eg PAYG? or is it then completely terminated.

2.  Request a pac code, but I guess this will go to my sons phone so wont ever get to see what it is as its a mare to get any sort of response out of him.  Then move it myself onto some other sim card when he returns for xmas.  Would I still be liable for early termination fee? if did it before final 29days are up?

3.  Can I choose to end contract with presume 30 day notice at the min but also get pac code same time too?  so at least he then has the option/time to sort out a diff one for himself?

Thanks

  • Oh, alternatively, do I get an option to convert it to a PAYG account?  this would be preferred as gives him the chance to sort it himself while not actually losing number
  • From what I gather, I think I can give the 30 day notice now, but then later on, when he returns home for xmas, request a PAC code, and get it transferred onto another sim?  As looks like I need to get the sim card number to be able to convert to PAYG with 30 day numbers while trying to search it
  • Is this just an airtime contract or was there a handset supplied as well?

Do you wish your son to take over responsibility for paying for his own phone service? Is it your intention to end your contractual relationship with Vodafone?

The mechanics of ending your contract (the contract you have now doesn't actually end in 29 days, what ends is the minimum period that you have agreed to take the service) are reasonably simple, what needs to be decided is who, if anyone, is taking financial responsibility for the current phone number.

Easiest thing to do is nothing, the contract/service continues as is and will do so until either you or Vodafone give notice that is going to end or change.

The 30 days notice will apply to disconnecting the service, however if you pac your number after your minimum term you will just be charged pro rata until your number is transferred.
Chances are that if you do nothing you will be overpaying for the service you are receiving.

Thanks both, its to end the contract, preferably get his number ported I think onto a cheap PAYG sim so that he can then make his own decisions on if to take a contract or otherwise now that he's old enough.  I tried checking the website again last night for even just putting the cancel notice in, but at best all I could get was a STAC code option or PAC code, no option to actually terminate the contract without calling them.  As theres a few days difference, it may be easier to get the PAC code from them as soon as he returns home for xmas, and then request the PAC and port it there and then, as the website and the Vodafone app, other than PAC/Stac seem to be a bit useless, so prob time to hunt see if they still do the likes of those 1p sim cards to just get it across :)

You may find the website gives you more options once your minimum term has ended. At the moment you are tied in but once you are free to leave they may well try to offer you new deals to keep you.
It's also worth noting that you don't have to use a pac if you request one and it can act as a wake up that you are looking at your options. Pac's last for 30 days from issue.
