  • Thanks for your comments, at least I won't waste effort looking for something that doesn't exist. I will follow up all suggestions, though.

My daughter has done a lot of checking for cards also with no luck.
What sort of checking has she been doing?  Eligibility checkers are rarely 100% reliable but conversely, firing in multiple actual applications would generate numerous hard searches on her credit files, which become self-defeating as a negative factor that would discourage prospective lenders.

Is she regularly checking her credit files in detail, both to verify that everything recorded is accurate and also to potentially get pointers about ways to improve, which may include other options beyond credit cards?

When were the defaults recorded, or to put it another way, when will they drop off her files, six years later?  Is she actually going to need a decent credit rating for something specific before then, or is it just a generic desire to make progress?

My daughter has a poor credit rating due to the actions of her ex-husband.
What does her credit history look like?
To be honest, I don't actually know. All I know is that ex managed to take out loans in her name and default on them thus lumbering her with a bad record.

What is on her history is important as that is what lenders are looking at.  If these loans were taken our fraudulently then they should be reported and dealt with as such with a view to having them removed from her record.

    Report ex to police
Update banks with the police report confirming it was fraud
If not, they will just assume she was happy with the loans and they won't disappear from the record until 6 years after the default

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Did she acts as guarantor for these loans ?

Then she needs to report these as fraud and inform the lenders that she wats them removed from her record.  She may have to push but it is worth it to clean up her history.

For clarity, I did not originate the quote posted above at 9:12am.
It's my understanding that whoever acts as guarantor for a loan is legally responsible for clearing it.
Not sure if the defaulter is culpable for fraud in these circumstances - unless he arranged a credit agreement in her name without her knowing of course.
The lenders will want it settled before the record can be cleared presumably.
Maybe somebody more knowledgeable can clarify ?

Unless the op tells us that these were guarantor loans, I think we must assume that they weren't

    Indeed.
Perhaps he was the additional cardholder ?
That would explain the scenario quoted.

  • Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.
Just to be clear, everything fraudulent was done after the split and without my daughter's knowledge.
That is until the bailiffs turned up.
Everything, including the abuse has been reported, as far as I can see the ex is a thoroughly dodgy character who knows how to work the system to his advantage. In any case that is now in the past.
As far as the credit card goes, my daughter used the MSE credit card tool and has now received a credit builder card through Zable.
    Thanks again for your help.
I will close this thread now.
