I have taken out new insurance on the vehicle starting early into December. The insurance is pretty much like for like with Direct Line’s renewal that I was late trying to renew by 8 hours. Worked out in my favour as the new insurance is £50 less than the renewal and half what Direct line were quoting for this year. The excess on the new insurance is higher but all the other elements are the same. Don’t think I will be using Direct Line in the future! I do not need to SORN my vehicle, (I checked on the government’s website )until the new insurance starts as it is on private property well away from any public roads.0

Silw said:I do not need to SORN my vehicle, (I checked on the government’s website )until the new insurance starts as it is on private property well away from any public roads.I fear you have misunderstood this part. If the vehicle has no insurance then it MUST be SORN'd, that's the law: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehiclesBut if it is SORN'd then it must also be kept on private land (a garage or driveway, for instance), and not on the public highway. So you need to SORN it and keep it "off the road" (that's what SORN stands for). You can be fined if it you don't SORN it - although I do believe that you'd receive a letter first telling you to SORN it, then you get fined if you still don't SORN (or insure) it.

Insurance is more expensive the nearer you are to the start of the policy,. That is why it is recommended to arrange weeks in advance as you have done with your new policy.1
