A Skype question

Since installing Skype in readiness for speaking to our daughter in the Falklands, (via windows live/webcam) I've noticed that it takes much longer to boot up, is that usual?.
I was about ready to install Skype on her laptop (for the same reason) and she asked if it was necessary, as we've both noticed an audio facility within WL. So, I question if we actually do need it.
